penumbra (ongoing)

pe·num·bra /pəˈnəmbrə/
noun: the partially shaded outer region of the shadow cast by an opaque object. shadows cast by the earth or moon over an area experiencing a partial eclipse.

I’m drawn to the tragic and dreamy aspects of the world; the way fixtures in our lives flow in and out, disappearing and reappearing in new forms. Necessary dualities empower our connection to one another, to feel, to fight and to live. I wanted to capture people I knew in various places. Some images purposely exclude the subject’s face while others emphasize their expressions. Distorted reality is a theme I explored through this series, as I seek magic in the dark. Quite a few of these pieces were inspired by horror tropes: mythical monsters and haunting ghosts. To me, a photograph holds a kind of spirit. The stories we tell ourselves become fairytales and as time progresses, we shed and evolve: live on or die. What can we find in a fleeting moment?
